Adelman & Taylor Workshop
Iowa schools recognize the essential nature and challenge of providing effective learning supports to enable the learning and development of all students by preventing and reducing barriers to student success. Drs. Adelman and Taylor, co-directors of the UCLA Center for School Mental Health Project, are presenting a workshop entitled, Learning Supports: Addressing Barriers to Learning – New Directions for Student Support. The workshop will be held at the Mississippi Bend Area Education Agency, located at 729-21st Street, Bettendorf, on October 17, 2006 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
The workshop will focus on ways address the achievement gap and the plateau effect that many schools are encountering. Emphasis will be on framing a full continuum of essential school-community interventions, mapping and analyzing the current infrastructure, and understanding the key facets of systemic change.
During the past two years, Drs. Adelman and Taylor have provided technical assistance to the Iowa Department of Education and Iowa Area Education Agencies. Drs. Adelman and Taylor are currently involved in large-scale systemic school reform initiatives. The initiatives promote the enhancement of state, school and community efforts to provide and develop healthier learning environments for our nation’s schools, and address the barriers to learning faced by today’s students.
