Driver Education Program Designed to Save Districts Time & Money
The Mississippi Bend Area Education Agency (AEA) Driver Education Program was established more than 12 years ago in response to local school districts. Bettendorf and Pleasant Valley were the first school districts to utilize this service. The effectiveness of the program is based on not only cost savings to districts, but time savings. Local districts who participate in the Mississippi Bend AEA Driver Education Program are able to focus more time on the rigors to improving student learning and increased instructional time for core curriculum. Iowa Code section 321.178 directs “Every public school in Iowa…” to “offer or make available to all students residing in the school district, an approved course in driver’s education.”
The Mississippi Bend AEA program follows the state approved driver education guidelines. We provide 30 hours of classroom instruction and 6 hours of behind the wheel instruction, and programming is tailored so that individual school districts can best meet the needs of their students. Class formats are arranged in 3-week and 6-week segments. Driver education classes may be offered throughout the year. However, the summer session is by far the most requested timeframe for students to take Driver Education classes. The 3-week course is also our most popular as students must carve out time in their busy schedules.
The Mississippi Bend AEA Driver Education works to maintain an efficient pricing structure. Our current cost is $305 per student, which is below state average. We do allow families to make payments toward the driver education fee. We work to create a professional management system with a help desk to support customer questions and concerns. Fourteen local districts are currently utilizing the Mississippi Bend Driver Education Program. More than 1700 students are being served. They include:
- Central Community
- North Scott
- Pleasant Valley
The Mississippi Bend AEA Driver Education is focused on quality instruction. Fifty-two instructors work with area youth to provide comprehensive instruction about driving both in the classroom and in the car.
