September 7, 2012

DES MOINES, IA – Five Iowa schools are among 269 schools nationwide named 2012 National Blue Ribbon Schools for their overall academic excellence or for their progress in improving student academic achievement levels:

  • Carroll High School (Carroll Community School District)
  • Crescent Elementary School (Council Bluffs Community School District)
  • Lincoln Elementary School (Mount Pleasant Community School District)
  • Mitchellville Elementary School (Southeast Polk Community School District)
  • West Delaware High School (West Delaware County Community School District)

U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan recognized the schools at an announcement today at an elementary school in Arlington, Va. The U.S. Department of Education will honor 219 public and 50 private schools at a recognition ceremony on Nov. 12-13 in Washington, D.C.

“Iowa’s Blue Ribbon Schools have demonstrated a commitment to excellence and to making sure students are prepared to succeed in college and careers,” Iowa Department of Education Director Jason Glass said. “These schools will help lead the way as we move toward world-class schools for all Iowa students.”

The U.S. Department of Education’s National Blue Ribbon Schools award honors public and private elementary, middle, and high schools where students perform at very high levels or where significant improvements are made in students’ levels of achievement.

Since 1982, nearly 7,000 schools in the U.S. have received the coveted award. Read more about the 2012 National Blue Ribbon Schools at
