Little Moments - Big Magic!

February 28, 2007

My Mentor @ School is developed by Mississippi Bend Area Education Agency in collaboration with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Clinton, Muscatine and the Quad Cities with funding from the United States Department of Education, Office of Safe and Drug Free Schools. The purpose of My Mentor @ School is to create a sustainable school-based mentoring program that promotes academic and social growth among students with the greatest need. The objectives of the program are:

  1. By spring of year three, 90% of mentor/mentee matches will be sustained for a least one year
  2. By spring of year three, 80% of mentored students will have improved their achievement in reading and math measured by the Iowa Test of Basic Skills (ITBS)
  3. By spring of year three, 80% of mentored students will have improved attendance as documented by school attendance records

My Mentor @ School is in the second year of a three year grant cycle and provides over 200 mentors to elementary students in ten area school districts. Trained mentors develop strong personal relationships with students to foster connection to school and community and develop strong academic skills. Since a portion of a weekly mentor/mentee meeting may be spent on academic issues, assistance with homework or career awareness, Mississippi Bend Area Education Agency, provides training and support through a series of monthly mentor meetings at each of the regional Big Brothers Big Sisters offices. The agency is also creating a series of web-based modules designed for mentors and caregivers. The purpose of the modules is to increase the knowledge and skill levels of adults who provide homework assistance and academic support. The modules will be available on the AEA9 website in the spring of 2007 with funds provided by My Mentor @ School.
