Media Specialists' Academy
The purpose of the Media Specialists' Academy is to provide quality leadership and professional development that will enable media specialists to provide effective programs that improve student achievement.
For the past four years, AEA9's Media Specialists' Academy has provided a unique professional development opportunity for teacher-librarians to stay abreast of school improvement efforts and advancements in technology that impact their schools. Our Media Specialists' Academy evolved from a summer course over five years ago to an annual program attended by over 60 teacher-librarians from our area. The Media Specialists' Academy meets four days each year and provides Graduate or Relicensure credit for participants.
This professional development is specifically designed for teacher-librarians to help them enhance what classroom teachers are doing to increase student achievement. Numerous State studies have clearly documented the vital link between strong media programs and student achievement. Click here to view the study.
The content covered in the Media Academy directly supports school improvement efforts. For example, our 2005-2006 Academy focused on note-taking skills, content area reading, graphic organizers, and new technology tools. Next years Media Academy is titled, "Rigor and Relevance in the Media Center" and will feature the following:
- The High School Summit and how it pertains to K-12 schools and their media centers
- Podcasting applications for K-12 schools
- Iowa AEA Online Resources and Curriculum Connections
- Online Reading Skills
- Grant Writing Techniques and Opportunities
- The Principals and Media Specialists as Partners
- Information Literacy Skills
- Best Practices in K-12 Library Media Centers
