Scott County Regional Authority Grant Helps Area Children
Mississippi Bend Area Education Agency (AEA) Physical Therapy Department serves many families, within a five county region, whose children have physical/multiple disabilities. These children often require the use of adaptive equipment and assistive technology to increase their independence at home, school, and in their community. Cost makes the process of obtaining this equipment difficult. Many families do not have the financial resources or insurance to meet these costs.
In 1998, Mississippi Bend AEA, with the assistance of Muscatine Pilot Club, started an adaptive equipment loan Library. The purpose of the library is to:
- Provide children, families, and schools an opportunity to try a variety of options for adaptive equipment to determine the best fit for a child’s specific needs.
- Increase opportunities for children to explore their environments at home, school, and community before incurring any costs.
- Increase a child’s functional independence, in all settings, as they develop and grow.
Recently, the loan library was able to expand its offerings by purchasing Gait Trainers, to assist in walking; Dynamic Standers, to help interact in upright positions; and multi-functional tricycles to encourage participation and socialization (partial list of purchases). These purchases were made possible by a grant from the Scott County Regional Authority (SCRA) in the amount of $27,491.00. Bea Flahive, physical therapist at Mississippi Bend AEA, says, “The SCRA grant has provided our students, within the schools and their homes, the opportunity to experience 21st Century adaptive equipment to enhance their learning through improved positioning and mobility”.
The loan library has proven to be an immense benefit to the children, families, and schools we serve; thanks to this grant it will continue to do so.
