Substitute Authorization - Fostering Student Learning as a Substitute
The Mississippi Bend Area Education Agency in Bettendorf will be offering a 20 hour course throughout the months of April and May for the Substitute Authorization Program. This is an opportunity for individuals with a BA degree or higher, or those with Paraeducator Certificates, to get the requirements needed in order to substitute teach in a middle/junior high/intermediate school, or high school for no more than five consecutive days in one job assignment. Upon completion of this course, Paraeducators will also be authorized to substitute in the special education classroom in which the individual paraeducator is employed (in a middle school/junior high school/intermediate or high school only).
The four core components of the Substitute Authorization course are Classroom Management, Strategies for Learning, Diversity, and Ethics. Upon successful completion of the program, the participant may apply to the Board of Educational Examiners for the Substitute Authorization for one year. Because this authorization is not a guarantee of employment, it's recommended that individuals considering this course check with the distrist(s) in which they wish to substitute teach to determine their hiring practices and whether or not they choose to hire substitutes with this authorization. The Substitute Authorization course cost is $115. That includes the cost of materials.
Upon completion of this course, individuals may obtain a three-year certificate by sending the state an application form, check for $137, transcript, finger print card and waiver, and proof of completion of the mandatory child and dependent adult abuse class.
